Oh, this is the picture of Candan that I have on my bureau and that I love so much because it so captures that wide-open-to-the-world spriit of hers. I also love the one of baby Candan below because you can see that she always had that kind of spirit!

I have been listening to a song by KD Lang and Jane Siberry, "Calling All Angels." The refrain is, "Calling all angels, calling all angels, Walk me through this one, Don't leave me alone. Calling all angels. . . we're crying, we're hoping, we're loving, we're hurting, 'Cause we're not sure how this goes." And my thoughts are on Candan, and I'm never sure whether I'm praying for her or to her. . . to help me through this grief.

I was thinking yesterday, as I looked around my kitchen, my favorite room in my house, how I had several things there that were presents from Candan, and of how dear they were to me because they were from her. One is a pretty round Turkish ceramic tile that I use as a hot plate. And one is a ceramic ball with a protective "eye" that is just like the little beads on a scarf Candan was wearing. Her mother had painstakingly sewed all those beads on that scarf to protect her daughter, and sometimes I cry when I think of that. There is also a little model of Cappadocia that Candan sent back to me with Soren after he and Julia visited her last spring. She took them to see that remarkable place because she wanted to show them the beautiful wonders of her country. Candan was very, very proud of her heritage, of being Turkish, and that showed in lots of ways.

Thank you for these new pictures of Candan, Bayraktar. I had seen the baby picture before, but I have never seen one of her as a school-aged child. Do you have one of those to post? I'd love to see Candan at that age.
